Today is Bastille Day or as it is better known across the channel, Le Quatorze Juillet, the 14th of July.
The storming of the Bastille fortress, on the 14th of July, 1789 was an early turning point during the French revolution. Remembered in history as a symbolic act of rebellion against the French authorities, the event succeeded in unifying the various unhappy elements in French society; the catalyst for the revolution.
To help celebrate the occasion and the subsequent creation of the 1st French Republic, Bastille day is an official holiday in France, marked with a grand military parade along the Champs-Élysées which is presided over by the president, Monsieur Sarkozy.
Throughout the country there are various civilian parades, musical performances, communal meals, dances, balls and of course spectacular firework displays.
History lesson over, we have selected some of our favourite French pieces to aid in the festivities with our continental cousins. From Rive Gauche chic to cheeky Parisienne stripes, these lovely pieces are sure to cause a little tête-à-tête with your lingerie drawer.
