Speaking of the devil…

Glowing witches hat? Check. Smelly pumpkin mush? You betcha. Enough candy to keep a postcode worth of kids sugar-high? Why, sure. But why is the day we spend so long getting spooky, so hard to team with being seductive? 

 

It's not that we want to wear Playboy bunny ears- and we're more than happy to leave St Trinians to the teens. But to actually feel like you’ve just fled the circus of horrors or crawled out a can of worms? Um, no thanks. So in the name of having a fabulous Halloween, here are some last minute tips on how to stay gorgeously ghoulish.

 

Just because, we know as a figleaves customer, you'll always be the belle of the beasts. 

 

1.     1. Go in for gothic glamour

Feeling good doesn’t mean half measures.  Think Morticia Adams’ tantalizingly red lips or Cat Woman’s bold smoldering eyes and embrace the look you’re going for. Add a paled out face and statement hair to work wonders. If you get your shoulders upwards right (and it really is as simple as a quick backcomb here, a splash of blood there) the costume will naturally follow. 

 

2.     2. Use it as an excuse to buy something you will wear again…

Put down rash purchases, there is no need. This season is brimming with all the burnout lace, bondage leather and dazzling sequins you could possibly desire. To make it even more easy, here’s a quick peek at our favourites: French Connection’s studded batwing dress, figleaves chic winter maxi and, of course, the leather look leggings.

 

3. H 3. Have fun!

Embrace toffee apple scoffing, dunk like you’ve never dunked before and limbo like nobody’s watching. Don’t hold back on behalf of your makeup. Just take a Halloween handbag (see tip no.2) stashed with backup supplies.   

 

4. Dim the lights   

Just because everything seems to come in acid orange doesn’t mean you must transform your house into a garish mess. Simply light a candle, kill the brights and enjoy your romantically ghost-like layer.

 

 

5. Wear fabulous underwear

Yes, we know this one’s a little predictable, but if you’re going to have to don a shoddy wig and haggard witches nose the only way to feel irresistible is by looking exquisite underneath. To be truly vamp match Midnight Grace’s Foxglove set with Aristoc’s deliciously sheer stockings.  

 

There you go: drop dead gorgeous.

How to Look Good Naked

How refreshing it is spending a night in, curled up on the sofa with a man who adores our curves. We love it when Tuesday evenings come around and tonight was no exception.

Our guilty pleasure Gok never fails to let us down with his wittily worded, no nonsense approach to making women feel good about themselves and their bodies. Once again we're thrilled that he used some of our figleaves.com favourites to help him with his body confidence mission in tonight's How to Look Good Naked.

We spotted the Helena dressing gown by Julianne. Styled in 100% silk, it's destined to make any woman feel beautiful every time it touches the skin. Indulge yourselves, we know you deserve it.
Our other figleaves spot of the evening was Wonderbra's gel balcony bra which creates a natural looking cleavage. We love the discreet rose detail which adds a lovely twist to a lingerie drawer staple.

A week in Matt's pants

Last week, emboldened by the success of Matt Punton’s Hom trial, we decided to set ourselves a challenge. We hoped to succeed where Carrie Bradshaw failed, we hoped... to change a man! (Cue dn dn dn theatrical music)

OK, so the challenge wasn’t quite as dramatic as that. After Matt P did such a U-turn on the Hom trunks we wondered why it was that women have such wonderful and varied lingerie drawers but men seem to stick rigidly to old favourites. With this question in mind off we ran to persuade our HR manager Matt Garrett to get involved.

Over the last week Matt G has sported a figleaves basic brief, a Calvin Klein boxer, a Duchamp trunk, a Hom thong, and Equmen shapewear trunks. Here’s his week in pants. . .

Monday. A brief encounter

 

I’m normally a trunks guy so anything else is a bit alien to me. Today I’ve opted for the figleaves basic brief in navy blue which is actually a bit conservative for me. I usually go for a splash of colour. However, these fit a treat and are actually really comfy. Nice cotton, good amount of elastic to hold everything in... excellent!

I’m giving them thumbs up and I’d definitely consider wearing briefs in the future, maybe more colourful ones but I’m going to get these figleaves basics for the gym.

Tuesday. Boxing clever

 

Second day in and I’m wearing some Calvin Klein woven boxers which are in a nice striped blue! I am a trunk man, so the last time I wore boxers was in 1998 when someone bought me a novelty pair for Christmas and I begrudgingly wore them smarting at having Santa Clause and Rudolph waving from my groin. 

First things first…unlike the briefs of yesterday these bad boys are no snug fit-fest! As I pulled them on this morning I felt like a Welterweight Boxer sparring with myself in the mirror for several minutes shouting Rocky one liners.

The boxers fit well but they’re not an everyday, every man choice. If you’re a bigger build these boxers will give you greater comfort and movement and are a bit airier. Think twice about wearing them to the Gym especially if you’re doing cardio...

Wednesday. Comfort Zone
 
Today I have been wearing Duchamp’s Basic 2 button trunk and I am happy to be back on familiar territory. The fit is perfect and colours are very on trend. The look and feel of the cotton is of a high quality and by the end of the day they’d maintained their shape and texture.

Trunks are great for loads of reasons. They are practical and versatile; they fit any body shape;  they come in more colours and styles than any other underwear, even the waistbands are good to show off; you can wear them under any outfit.

Duchamp is a definite winner for me, so if you like your underwear functional, good quality and with great colours I really recommend them. I’m off to make some purchases!!!!

Thursday. Thong Song

 

The day I’ve feared all week! Thongs, G-Strings, Micro Briefs are all marmite for men….you either love them or loathe them.

I’m trying on the HOM Fredy thong today and they’re tiny! After three attempts I work out which way up and which way round they should be worn. One false move could be lethal!

When I arrive at the figleaves.com office I’m asked by the bloggers which pants I’m wearing. I look sheepish and twang the elastic waistband. They laugh until they recognise the pain on my face and then smile apologetically saying “Thanks for taking one for the team Matt”.

I’m desperately trying to understand why people wear them. Women wear them all the time. Do women have a higher pain threshold then men? That said, HOM make great pants and really take comfort and fit to a new level. There is nothing wrong with the fabric or quality of the Freddy Thong it’s just that this style is not for me.

We sell lots of thongs so who is buying them and do you find them comfy? Tomorrow I’m wearing Equmens revolutionary precision underwear that supports and holds everything in place…..I’m definitely going to need it!

Friday. A perfect fit

 

After yesterday's extravaganza I’m in Equmen’s Precision Fit trunks. Firstly they’re trunks and you know I love my trunks, secondly the label states that they are styled for cool temperature control and have precision fit support pouch (no fly) which supports posture and improves form.  This all sounds very soothing.....a far cry from yesterday’s Thong!

I was expecting them to feel tight and constraining but they feel invisible on but at the same time supporting.  They just look like normal trunks but they have a higher spandex content so they stretch when your body moves.  The cool temperature control also works surprisingly well….  These are going to be a guaranteed winner at that gym!  I have never worn a better, more comfortable pair of underwear, they are truly the daddy of the pants world….Before I gush too much over these there is a ‘but’! The ‘but’ is the price, at £32 a pair they’re not cheap. If you can overlook the price tag you will get the most comfortable pants ever.

So my week in pants is up and what have I learnt? I think variety is the spice of life and mixing up our underwear drawer as much us the opposite sex does is a good thing. With so many varieties, colours and styles out there go on and mix it up. It's time for us men to take charge of our underwear! Banish the grey and saggy and get down in a variety of styles and colours to match our moods and clothes. Don't be afraid just have some fun....er am I beginning to sound like Gok?!?!

Shaping up

It seems like only yesterday that Jerry and I were given our Lytess Slim Wear shaping shorts to trial. The 18 days has been and gone, and after wearing the product for the recommended eight hours a day, six continuous days a week for nearly three weeks, we’re now ready to share what we thought with you.

The new range is infused with Caffeine and Shea butter to moisturise and improve skin tone. The brand says that after 18 days you can expect to see a smoothed and shaped silhouette as the technology behind the product works with your body to eliminate toxins and reduce fats creating a slimming effect.

The range comes in a full length legging, a Capri pant and a short. In the beginning we opted for the shorts which were surprisingly light and we were even able to wear them under jeans. We both wore the small to medium size and even though I’m a size 14, I found them comfortable and not at all snug even under my heavier denim.

The shorts are cycling short length so under a knee length skirt they remain well hidden. Under shorter skirts we were flashing a little of our Lytess so we introduced the Capri and leggings into our wardrobes to allow us flexibility when planning an outfit.

The Capri pants are not easy to wear now that there’s a nip in the air but in summer under a dress with sandals or pumps they’ll look great. They are also perfect for the gym as the technology works best when you’re mobile. We both enjoyed teaming the leggings with oversized Autumn knits and dresses and I’ll definitely continue to wear mine throughout the season with winter boots and chunky scarves to stave off the cold. The slight shine on the finish means that I can even pair them with a party dress and heels for leggings with luxe on a Saturday night.

Throughout the trial we kept a close eye on our legs for any signs of improvement. As promised skin was noticeably softer, smoother and delicately moisturised by the Shea butter but it was the slimming effect that we were most amazed by. Jerry lost five centimetres from her hips and thighs and I lost three.

In terms of wearability the items are surprisingly versatile. More importantly though they do deliver on the results front so if you want a comfortable piece of shapewear which you can wear as outerwear for any occasion then these could be the ones for you.

Monsoon season

We love welcoming new brands to the figleaves.com family. New for SS/10 we’re thrilled to announce the arrival of Monsoon’s lingerie collection developed by the same group who have given us fellow figleaves favourite Ballet.

The first range from the high street store has just launched and we were lucky enough to be invited down to their press night to partake in some champers and cupcakes and sample the delicately designed bras, briefs, and nightwear for AW/09.

While Monsoon won’t arrive at figleaves.com until February, our sneak peek at the current line has left us giddy with anticipation for the fresh delights we can expect when the collection launches here. We couldn’t help but give you a taste too.

Vintage inspired designs feature exquisite eyelash details, like the Jolie balconette bra that our Marketing Assistant Caroline bought. Floral and folksy prints, pastel colour palettes styled in satin, and ornate detailing make for a chic and glamorous collection that we know will be very at home at figleaves.com.

 
One of our favourites, the Odele balconette bra in powder blue, will be restyled in cream for SS/10. We think it will be perfect for wearing under the sorbet sweet lemon tones that have graced the catwalks in recent weeks.

Briefs and nightwear will be available in sizes S-XL. Bras will range from a 32-38 back and will be available in cup sizes B-E. Judging by what we’ve seen from Monsoon we can’t wait for SS/10 and know you’ll feel the same.

Love to lounge

It’s 7.00 am and the alarm is ringing. Begrudgingly you heave yourself out from underneath your warm duvet and hop towards the shower quickly so as not to let that unmistakeable nip in the air take hold. 7.30 am and you flick on the breakfast news. The weatherman wildly gesticulates at his bluescreen and declares “a cold snap is on its way”.

8.15am you leave the house and find your breath catches on the air for the first time. As you walk to the car/bus/tube you note the sound of fallen autumn leaves crunching underfoot and it’s at about this time that you pull your light jacket closer, lament that you forgot to drape a scarf around your neck and long for the evening when you can curl up on the sofa in your loungewear and slippers, adjust your thermostat and resolutely affirm your position not to leave the house.

Texture

It looks like blustery autumn weather has truly set in down here in London, and while we wave a fond farewell at figleaves.comto all those feather light styles of summer, personally I'm getting excited at the thought of the gorgeous textures I'll be piling on for the next...oh 9 months or so! A/W styling tends to be much more interesting and complex than simple summer outfits, so I've picked out our 3 key textures to inspire you.

Knitted

From chunky, thick cable knitsthat snuggle you up in fat woollen yarns, to delicate, elegantly draping Merino, silk or jersey blends, the texture that defines autumn/winter style is ‘knitted’.For comfort you can’t beat soft knitted textures, but keep things sleek and modern by focusing on knitwear as tactile, sensual and flattering.

How to wear:

Layering is the key to getting knitted texture right. Invest in some warmer pieces you’ll wear time and again such as a thick scarfand chunky cardigan, and then make sure you have plenty of lighter weight options to wear with.

Experiment with weights and colour of knitwear to see what works. A lightweight tunic dresswould look great with a fine jersey top layered underneath, woolenor delicate lace tights, and a scarf wound loosely round the neck. Wear with sheepskin bootsto keep things casual. For a really sensual look and dramatic contrast, throw a heavy knit wrap or cardigan over delicate silk lingerie.

How to pair:

Pair knitted and glitter textures by adding a small sparkling clutch bagto a delicate jersey knit outfit after dark, or by loading up on diamante bangles.

Glitter

The glitter texture encompasses everything from intricate sequin detailing to heavy studs and rock chick diamante. Perfect for the party season, add some sparkle to lift your outfit or go all out glam with heavy textural detail.

How to wear:

A simple way to get this look right is to use a sequinned accessory as a statement piece; try pairing a sequin boleroor clutch bag with a simple jeans and t-shirt combo. For a more formal look, a dress embellished with studs or glitter creates a fabulous ‘look at me’ party style. Wear with low-key accessories that won’t clash or overload on sparkle. The most subtle way to wear the glitter texture is by adding a chunky beaded necklaceor bracelet to everyday outfits.

How to pair:

Pair glitter and leather textures to create a cool, indie vibe – a leather clutchor patent shopperbag would add a twist to the jeans, t-shirt and sequin bolero outfit. With simple knitted textures, pile up glitzy beaded jewels over a fine cashmere tunic dress or layered jersey tops.

Leather:

From buttery smooth styles to warm, soft suede and glossy patents, the leather texture is versatile but tough, adding an edge to any outfit.

How to wear:

Avoid going overboard with leather – you don’t want to recreate any 80s mistakes... Instead add key accessories and focus on unusual or luxurious textural details. For example, a crocodile stylefinish or a patent in a deeply lush jewel tonemakes a gorgeous statement bag. Invest in a wear-all-season jacket in leather or suede that you can throw over any outfit.

How to pair:

Leather is a great texture to add structure. Cinch chunky knits with a leather belt or wear a suede jacket with a nipped in waist over layers of fine jersey. Wrap a thick woolen scarf round the neck of a leather bomber for a cosy and relaxed look.

Footloose and Fancy Free

As the weather changes and we fondly pack away our gladiators sandals and swirling tea-dresses for those three days of, um,  next ‘summer’, there is one word saving us from plunging into serious wardrobe SAD: hosiery. 

 

Yup, odd as it may seem, the days of tights being frumpish are dead. In fact, while our winter palettes will be all about creamy camel, chic grey and lashings of good old timeless black, it sometimes seems the only place we can have a little fun is with our legs.

And, yet, where to start? After coming of age at the Chanel show in Paris, Lily Allen stepped out in London last night wearing a pair suspender motifed tights.  Chicer and far more sophisticated than flashing the real thing, the press have already been fawning over the fashion-forward style. And whilst we here at figleaves certainly don’t disagree, we were a little smug to note we’d had that look bagged for weeks.

 

 

Take a peek at the Mock Stocking from Henry Holland Hosiery to flaunt it for yourself.  Or, for something a little more demure, Jonathan Aston's Seem and Heel tights for an irresistible ‘40s evening look.

Meanwhile over in NYC, they’ve been keeping-up summer’s Crayola colours with a rainbow of bright hosiery. Blake Lively just sported a pair of raspberry toned fishnets all the way across Central Park for a grown-up ‘new series’ look. The trick is to mix the colour pop with charcoal grey by day for chic city style, or with glittering metallics after dark. We’re personally loving Jonathan Aston’s 40 Denier Opaques- an affordable way to revamp last winters favourite looks.

At least money’s not to0 tight to mention some little pleasures …

 

 

 

 

Model behaviour

Scrutiny of the use of models in fashion has intensified of late, building pressure on the industry’s perceived standards of beauty. Demand has grown for a more diverse use of models, representing women of all shapes, races and ages in magazines and on the catwalk. Change may be slow but it looks like the industry’s finally waking up.

At figleaves.com it’s also why we’re so keen to find beautiful fuller figure and DD+ models like Chloe and Violet. We think our new loungewear model Andrea is the perfect example of someone who’s slender but happy and healthy with it.

What started with the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty is now a commonly considered feature of many designers and brand campaigns. This year’s London Fashion Week saw inclusive catwalk shows from PPQ and Mark Fast, but in some ways it’s surprising to think that their use of a wider range of models is still seen by fashion insiders as shocking or a statement.

figleaves favourite How to Look Good Naked features models in their sixties and now Calvin Klein are hitting the streets in a bid to find the next big thing in their 9countries9men competition. Witnessing the ways in which popular pressure is changing the fashion industry is exhilarating; it’s great to see how the issues we believe in are reflected by consumers too.

In the 1980’s The Ford Supermodel of the Year competition launched as a means of identifying new talent for the fashion industry. 50 countries hold national regionals and the winners from each country go on to compete for the Supermodel of the Year title, winning a contract with the agency who have previously represented Twiggy, Elle Macpherson and the self styled ‘first’ supermodel, Janice Dickenson. 

Since its inception winners have gone on to model for Christian Lacroix, Diane Von Furstenburg and Oscar de la Renta.  The 2008 winner Kang Seung-Hyun became the S/S’09 face of Lacoste, and Chanel Iman, who took 3rd place in 2006, was the most booked model on Milan’s catwalks this autumn having previously walked for a plethora of designers including Marchesa, Marc Jacobs and Yves Saint Laurent.

As we read about this competition we were interested to note that candidates should be aged between 16-21. While we’re excited to see new British talent, we can’t help but feel that there are a lot of gorgeous women out there who could add even more beauty to the campaigns of our favourite designers, regardless of their age. We truly support the multitude of competitions that take place to find new faces for fashion but it’s far more interesting to watch designers who take a fresh approach to diversity in beauty.

This year’s Ford Supermodel of the Year competition will hold an open casting for the UK candidate on 23 October in Grosvenor Place, London, with the winner being crowned in November.

How to look good naked

Our Tuesday night ritual has quickly become settling down in front of the TV in our cosiest loungewear with a glass of wine and a laptop on our knees. The immediacy of shopping the items as they appear on screen is strangely satisfying.

Paris when it sizzles

Our favourite show this Paris fashion week has to be Yves Saint Laurent. Classic YSL tailoring in the form of pencil skirts were executed by Stephano Pilati with a controlled but sexy approach, cut from leather and flannel with above-the-knee splits. A structured white dress formed an achingly beautiful yet simple silhouette while black leather ruffles off-set sugar sweet strawberry motifs.

Chanel wooed the crowds with taffeta and chiffon, keeping feminine styling current with short hems and split sides. Black cobweb lace peeped from underneath a white tweed jacket, creating a delicate but sexy skirt.

At Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci focussed on strong, dynamic shapes in monochrome, or blended these colours with beige in fierce chevron prints. Chiffon ruffles and sheer dresses added to the sense of drama.

As the shows strut and stride to a close, we're full of love for the artistry and elegance of luxury French design. We're not about to rinse the plastic on a Chanel tweed suit just yet, but we can indulge in a little lingerie to satisfy our craving...

Hom: tried and tested

Over the last week a humble pair of pants has received a deluge of column inches and has even been featured on The Paul O’Grady show and This Morning. This underpant  is Hom's new HO1 Maxi trunk with a unique horizontal fly for comfort and ‘ease of use’.

 
With all this media buzz, we wanted to find out what all the fuss was about so the Blogleaves team coaxed our straight talking new boy, Matt, into trying the product out for a day.

Aside from their famously directional approach, Hom are known for their super soft and ultra comfy styling and it seems this trunk is no different.
